Notes

Description
Description
["Hadji Murad" is the story of an Avar field commander who goes over to the side of the Russians during the Caucasian War. With their help, he expects to rescue his family, captured by Imam Shamil, but soon he himself becomes a prisoner of the imperial administration and decides to escape.... "Hadji Murad" is one of Tolstoy's last works, the writer's final statement about personal freedom and what suppresses it. This is a ruthless characterization of Russian colonial policy, which is based on documented facts. And yet - the triumph of the artistic method, which allows the author to describe with equal depth military clashes and secular receptions, soldiers and leaders, Russians and mountaineers, life and death.]
